I would like to welcome all of you to our wonderful Early Years department. It is a vibrant, ambitious, community, enriching children’s lives and laying the foundations for lifelong learning.
We provide a safe and secure environment which extends and develops all areas of a child’s development within the seven areas of learning. We enable children to learn and develop their skills to the best of their ability. In our wonderful surroundings we promote self discovery, exploration, and curiosity towards learning.
‘Come through our door and start to Explore’ is our motto. We have both indoor and outdoor animals for your children to observe and take care of.
We are very excited to be welcoming you to our Early Years department. It is a privilege for us all to work with your children – they are inspirational.
We look forward to welcoming you.

The outdoorsiness, the fun the children have in a nurturing environment coupled with how the pre-school meets our childcare needs as we both work means Terra Nova was the obvious choice when choosing a school.” Mrs Rutherford, Legal Counsel & Mr Rutherford, Property Developer

The Foundations to Learn
Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that children lay down the foundations proven to be so vital for learning. There are 7 interconnected areas of learning and development. The 3 primary areas are:
Communication & Language
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The 4 additional areas through which the three primary areas are supported are:
Terra Nova School enjoys a uniquely stunning setting. Once Jodrell Hall, the school now occupies the main hall, farm buildings and stables with up to 35 acres of playing fields, woods, a walled garden, a meadow and an enormous sand pit! The Pre School is located in its own purpose built building adjacent to the sandpit, the walled garden and the meadow, all of which the children make use of throughout the day. The perfect space for learning, discovery and adventure.
Terra Nova School offers the perfect environment for your child’s physical development. Children in the Pre School are able to opt for private lessons at school in swimming, dance, ballet and football.
The children in Pre School are very much part of Terra Nova School and as such take advantage of every opportunity to utilise the school’s facilities beyond the Pre School part of school. The school has an auditorium known as the Performing Arts Centre where the children frequently perform in Christmas nativity plays, Easter concerts, Harvest Festival assemblies and have their own Graduation Ceremony at the end of the school year. Their confidence and ability to perform in front of an audience is an absolutely delight to see!
The Forest School is a resource that is used to the max by the school. It is certainly embraced by the Pre School children as they venture into the woods to toast marshmallows, make ‘windy wands’ and observe the changing seasons. Being in an outdoor environment enables the children to develop their independence, engage with and develop their understanding of nature as well as taking increased responsibility for themselves in a natural environment.
Getting the best from your child
Getting the best from your child and making sure they love their time at Pre School informs how the childrens’ day is structured. Fundamental to their time at Pre School is that the children will “learn through play”. Days at Pre School are carefully structured to include a wide range of activities both inside and outside of the classroom. The extensive facilities at Terra Nova are also available to Pre School children such as the Music Room, Forest School and the school’s auditorium. We want to spark a lifetime love of learning by channelling your child’s natural independence, creativity and curiosity
How the Pre School prepares your child for Terra Nova
Making the leap to full time school is a defining time for every child and their family. At Terra Nova Pre School, the children spend time with the Reception teachers, visit the Reception classrooms and wear the school uniform. As we like to say; “they walk the walk and talk the talk” and therefore are entirely confident in making the transition to full time school.
Specialist subject teaching is yet another a hallmark of a Terra Nova education and the children in the Pre School enjoy one hour a week of Music, French and in the Forest School delivered by these subject teachers. The children therefore benefit not only academically but also become used to being taught by a number of teachers in addition to having a growing familiarity in moving around the school a few times a week. All of which is an excellent preparation for becoming fully integrated in the main school.
The 7 areas of learning that are concentrated on in the Pre School create the perfect platform for the children to progress onto Terra Nova’s Baccalaurate. From Year 1 onwards, this is the framework used to underpin our school’s curriculum. Each pupil works with a personalised portfolio which tracks the progress of their school achievement in eight key areas of learning against core skills.
